Hi, I've cross posted to a number of newsgroups to get a better range of
opinions, and included the man utd. ones since it forms part of my question
and perhaps supporters of the team could help out.

I enjoy all sports, and play football, tennis, badminton, golf, as well as
the more dubious ones such as snooker and darts. I also enjoy watching
sport on tv, it's always good to see Europe beat the states in the Ryder
cup, and watching the new stars in snooker. I can understand why these are
enjoyable, you might like a player's style or be impressed at a youngster's
skill.

With sports such as, Athletics etc., It' all about supporting your country.
Sure, if a town or city is sending people to the olympics then you can
imagine that town supporting 'their man'., but ultimately it's about
supporting your nation, eg. we're all british: we want britain to win the
most medals.

International football games I also enjoy, i like football anyway and the
excitement at watching england do well in the euro and world cup is
unmatchable by any other sport in my opinion.

But what I don't understand is how one can support a club. I live in the
south east, and know a number of people that support Manchester Utd, despite
having no family from the city, no links to the city, in fact the only
reasons I've managed to get from them as to why they support man us seem to
be something like 'they're the best, I like how they play' etc. Recently
with Chelsea doing so well, my man u supporting friends have been
complaining about how shit chelsea is, how they're fans are the worst, how
they're all a bunch of glory hunters etc., and I just find it bizarre.

I can understand following a local team, such as one in the conference, but
then maybe also supporting one a bit further away, perhaps your nearest big
city, since you get to see them play a greater standard of football, but i
don't understand how someone can even get behind a random city 200 miles
away's side? More then that, there's so many people here in the south east
that seem to support a london club, in what seems a purely arbitrary way,
none of these people have any family links with the part of london that the
team comes from...

My dad's not a great follower of football, and i've always put down to the
fact that i've never followed a club to the fact that he doesn't himself.

I love watching football, but I just feel like i'm missing something, why
are people so against just following their local team down here in the south
east?

Being as I am only in my thirties, I'm going to have to take your word for
that.
